Johnstons of Elgin
Johnstons of Elgin sits perched on the banks of the River Lossie nestled deep in Scottish countryside. For over two centuries they have built a reputation as the experts in cashmere and fine woollens.
They have crammed in a lot of learning since their inception in 1797 - like the importance of building your mill next to a river that carries only the softest Scottish water, or how to weave the landscape into every one of their products. Keeping manufacturing on home soil is integral to their product - itâs their values that set them apart. It is an ethos that has a lot of synergy with us, here at Scotweb.
For two hundred years two families have owned and shepherded this bastion, they are The Johnstons and The Harrisons. A family run business to its core, Johnstons carry this message across their company, building a community within their work force.
Being the only vertical mill still standing in Scotland allows Johnstons to keep an unwavering eye on everything that leaves the mill - from raw fibre in the wool store to perfected garment on the showroom floor, from dying to blending, carding to spinning, winding to weaving, knitting to scouring, milling to teasling, cutting to folding, every process happens in-house. The cacophony of sounds that rise from the tireless machines is the heartbeat of the business. For me, the sound of the looms is synonymous with Scottish textile as a whole and the quality I see across all of our mills. Much like New York with her signature siren sound the boom of the looms is evocative of heritage and excellence.
